beta blockers 4 anxiety anyone?

Posted by clairey on February 13, 2004, at 16:36:55

I was thinking about trying these, as i will not take benzo's and i do not want to go on antidepressants. I dont get panics, but if i was put in the right situation i know i would! I have GAD and sometimes feel my heart racing and my chest feeling a bit tight!
Would beta blockers help?
What are the main side effects?

Thanks :)

Claiey whatsup,
Its ironic you speak of beta-blockers as I was just researching this same topic on Pubmed.. However, I also have access to the majority of articles through my university.. and I know personally that MANY surgeons employ propanol to reduce tremor...Thus, I can't help but deduce that it must NOT have significant cognitive side-effects.. anywayz, I believe a major side-effect is that its difficult to exercise!! I believe there is peripheral and central beta blockers, with central being the choice for anxiety-related use... Anywayz, I may try it myself.. In conclusion, I definately don't think you should fear beta-blockers as many of the healthcare profession employ these drugs themselves! (Thats the ultimate stamp of approval)
Good luck

As far as I know, beta blockers are used to help someone whose antidepressants or antianxiety meds are not working by themselves. Be aware that beta blockers act on the pace maker of the heart. They slow the heart down and that helps increase oxygen to the body. The body can build a dependance for them in long term usage. The pace maker of the heart will begin to depend on the beta blocker to regulate the heart. Beta blocker are contradicted for people with low blood pressure. Since they decrease the pace of the heart, they will decrease the blood pressure. Also, they are contradicted for those with depression. Beta blockers tend to cause depression. They also have affect the sexual ability for men. People tend to have a decrease in sex drive too. So, if depression and blood pressure isn't an issue, this may be an alternative. But, remember this drug is going to take over the main function of the pace maker of your heart.
