In reply to beta blockers 4 anxiety anyone?, posted by clairey on February 13, 2004, at 16:36:55
As far as I know, beta blockers are used to help someone whose antidepressants or antianxiety meds are not working by themselves. Be aware that beta blockers act on the pace maker of the heart. They slow the heart down and that helps increase oxygen to the body. The body can build a dependance for them in long term usage. The pace maker of the heart will begin to depend on the beta blocker to regulate the heart. Beta blocker are contradicted for people with low blood pressure. Since they decrease the pace of the heart, they will decrease the blood pressure. Also, they are contradicted for those with depression. Beta blockers tend to cause depression. They also have affect the sexual ability for men. People tend to have a decrease in sex drive too. So, if depression and blood pressure isn't an issue, this may be an alternative. But, remember this drug is going to take over the main function of the pace maker of your heart.
