beta blockers 4 anxiety anyone?

I was thinking about trying these, as i will not take benzo's and i do not want to go on antidepressants. I dont get panics, but if i was put in the right situation i know i would! I have GAD and sometimes feel my heart racing and my chest feeling a bit tight!
Would beta blockers help?
What are the main side effects?
