Switched from Paxil CR to Lexapro

Posted by Cheekymunnky on February 4, 2004, at 14:37:18

I switched from Paxil CR 37.5 to Lexapro 25 about a month ago. Is it possible I am still withdrawing from Paxil (I was told I'd have no withdrawal when switching directly)? I have gone cold turkey off of Paxil before and had horrid symptoms, this time I just feel tired and having lots of mood swings. Am I still adjusting to the Lexapro, or having withdrawals from Paxil, or... well, any advice? I am taking it for depression, GAD, OCD and panic disorder. Thanks!

I don't know what the equivalence between lexapro and paxil is, but 25mg is a whopper of a dose for most people; it's certainly a lot stronger than 37.5mg of paxil. Your tiredness and mood swings are most likely an effect of the lexapro, or at the very least your acclimating to a different drug. I question the use of such high dosages of lexapro, but then again, I question a lot of things that some people find extraordinarly effective. ;) If you don't have flu-like symptoms or "brain shock" (if you've gone cold turkey off of an SSRI, you most likely know what this is), chances are it's not withdrawl.

I've read about 120mg of celexa being used in treatment-refractory OCD.

Hi Cheeky,

Lexapro can definately make you tired and I wouldn't be surprised if your mood swings are being caused by your body's adjustment from Paxil to lex.

25 mg isn't an uncommon dose, but it does seem a bit high for someone starting out. Usually people begin with 10 mg (or lower if they're sensitive to meds). But if you haven't had any terrible side effects it might be the right level for you. I'm at 15 mg and will be increasing to 20 mg in a few days...so far so good.

I've found lex to be very effective for anxiety/panic disorder and depression. It does seem to take a while to kick in, but it's worth the wait. Best of luck to you!

K.
