Off Adderall, and has caused a mood cycle-

Posted by 1980Monroe on December 19, 2003, at 17:56:55

Yea i used to take Adderall 30mg for 4 yrs for ADD, and recently stopped comletely. For some reason i got into a habit of taking it at exactly 5:37pm to study and do research and do papers, other collage crap. It definitly was someting with my subcounsiouce - like a alarm reminder to take medicine, it happned everytime on the dot, weird. Anyways, i always relized that adderall got me motivated to stuff i just completly hated like sitting down and researching some old fart that was basically never known, and maybe only in 1 of 200000 sources. It got me all motivated and focused, and i could sit down, without just totally forgetting what i was doing and do something that was stimulting. I got really driven and ambitious too, it seemed to arouse my drive to achieve things in general, and made me calm, or more or a motivated calm. Usally im a nervous wreck having panic attacks becuase i dont know what the heck im going to do next, i need a reality check.

Alright anyways, sorry i went off subject- It was easy getting off, but i noticed about a several weeks later that right around 4:30'ish, i get a arousing feeling its like "ive been activated" and then later i noticed this feeling was similar to what adderall did. Its not the SAME exact feeling, like my body has suddenly starts miriculy making amphetamine, but my motivation and drive and are cranked up, i just sit and plan stuff thats 20 yrs down the road! I feel "full-throttle" in getting things done, like work, collage, achievment, pointless research, and focusing is a breeze. I feel like this until i go to bed, but the next day when i wake up, i feel so spaced out, and im just "bearly hanging on to life", and lazy. Classes are at 10am, i just bearly pass because i miss important info, but i feel like i just dont care. I feel down, adn i have no potential, depressed! Usally after class, go home and just crash, i just have no energy, or really anything. Suddenly, i get this burst of wakefulness, motivation and arousal, and i immidatly start to catch up crap i missed in class, or something that needs to be done. Its like a cycle, in one day, is this bi-polar, or just my mind doing a placebo performance? Really apprieciate advice, thanks

Hi:
In answer to your question, 'Adderall causes mood-cycle,' is yes. Not only this med. also all stimulant med. especially 'Ritalin.' Also, SSRIs, such as Zoloft, Prozac and etc. does NOT cause 'cycle,' but brings up 'Bipolar' if you are pre-disposed.
From the reading in your post, it's hard to say whether your symptom started developing into Bipolar that has two cycles, as your quote, one is depressive episodes and another is 'manic.' When your manic is milder, like burst energy, giddy and hyper moods, it's called 'hypo-manic' that is NOT deterimental to the life in general. However, if your manic is outrageous, like spending spree, hyper-sexual urge, very rageous form and i.e., then there certainly needs immediate pdoc.'s attention. In regard to depressive feelings, I am able to read in your last paragraph that is very vivid as depression.
ADD and ADDH is often mistakengly dxed as depression and vise versa. You thought you just had ADD, but you might have had depression?
In either cases, if you suspect you might have Bipolar, your symptoms is very milder form, for this, you may just need the first line of Bp med. like Depakote and Lithium or both. However, unlike Adderall, those meds. have adverse/side effects to some of those Bp, then be cautious before taking them.
In my suggestion, if this episodes/symptoms keep bugging you, then you need to call to see pdoc. asap.

This is almost exactly what I experience. When I wake up in the morning, I really feel down. I have no energy and don't feel like I have anything to look forward to each day. I usually go through the day with very little energy but, what's probably worse, I'm anxious too. My mind races and I procrastinate. It's the feeling of repeatedly changing the channel in your mind or a skipped CD. This is why my pdoc thinks I may have ADD and wants to try Adderall. I dropped off a script on Tuesday but I'm afraid to pick it up. I really want to be certain I have ADD before I start an amphetamine. By nature, I'm overly cautious.

I also can empathize with what happens to you at night. For me, around 10:00 p.m., it's like a light turns on and I start to focus and get motivated. I can actually get stuff done. Of course, this obviously isn't an ideal time to be productive. I just found a comprehensive report that was done on me when I was 7 years old. Apparently, I had ADD symptoms when I was young and my parents took me to a Child Development Center or something to investigate my behavior. I had totally forgotten about it until my mother brought it up a few days ago. I think by letting my pdoc read this evaluation we can get a much clearer picture of what's going on with me.

Keep us updated with your situation. I'm really interested.
