Hi all, we are retrying abilify for my 12 year old son. Due to the zyprexa weight gain, He got his first dose today a 10mg , although the doc gave me samples of both 10 and 15 i figured I tried him on 10 mg first and start off slow. He didnt have any noticeable side effects I gave it to him this morning, He fell asleep wonderfully tonite, even on zyprexa I sort of have to fuss with him, he seems overtired but sometimes has problems falling asleep today he did it on his own I was in shock. I hope this works out!!!!
I didnt see any restlessness at all, compared to the first time I gave him 15mg in the evening and he was up all night and had severe restless legs, but I noticed the restless legs getting worse lately even on the zyprexa.
although he seemed a bit crabby today and a little bit more scared than usual. His moodiness was more related to things I was doing he found disgusting, like picking my teeth, and burping, He gets overly obsessive about stuff he finds "gross" and sometimes his temper flares over it. think this is making his ocd worse? i am wondering if topamax is making his phobias worse, but he has a good amount of weight to lose he is on 100mg of topamax. Also for anyone who reads this post, do any of you have experience with Depakote ER? he is on this in stead of regular depakote, the doctor says there is no weight gain with the ER? what have you experienced?
Also he has some klonopin prescribed up to 1mg a day up to 3 times a day as needed, He only used it once so far, but he is suffering from severe separation anxiety as well.

yeah abilify is tough, i started at 3.75 mg and found it tough to deal with (feeling tired but not able to settle down and sleep) .. now it's not so badi guess if you are combining the sedating effects of zyprexa and the activating effects of abilify it might be producing a nice balance??

All I can say is that Zyprexa caused my wife EPS, and akathisia symptoms. She also gained 35 pounds. Though her doctor then wouldn't admit to any undesirable side effects, a new doctor (and plenty of articles I've read on the web) admit that eventually the weight gain can translate to diabetes, or hyperglicemia.
My wife was put on Abilify after discontinuing Zyprexa. As soon as she was off Zyprexa her EPS, and akathisia disappeared. Three weeks after Abilify she had akathisia again.
A new doctor has put my wife on Benadryl to help her sleep and to combat the Parkinson-like symptoms. Benadryl has anti-cholinergic action.
He also took her off Abilify, and advised discontinuing Serzone because of the liver-damaging possible effects. Serzone cannot be prescribed in Europe or Canada. I guess we Americans have to wait until five thousand die to stop it.
Best of luck to you,
Nickm

He was ok last nite went right to sleep, For some reason it seems alot of kids do better than adults on it. but we will see, I am worried about it building up too much in his system, the half life is so long!!
he is not taking the zyprexa he didnt take any yesterday but it is probably still in his system from the evening before, we will see how things go!

Zyprexa never causes him EPS and actually it has been a wonderful drug in helping him cope, but at the same time yes he did gain weight ALOT 50 lbs in 3 months. He has some weight to lose, but also some inches to grow, he was extremely athletic before with wonderful ability so this is bothersome. I am hoping the abilify works, Good luck to your wife I hope she finds something that works for her.

Hi, I had a question if I may: Your prescribing doctor of the Abilify agrees it's OK to try for your 12-year old son?
Maybe this will ease your concern a little...my friend Karen is on Abilify and it has worked really well for her. She is 36 though. I gained weight on Zyprexa also, and immediately went off it. It was the only med I could take while doing ECT.
I'm glad to hear though, that Zyprexa is helping your son to cope.
I know that going from an wonderful athletic ability before to watching him like this must be bothersome~for sure.Re: Depakote ER, here is the start of a thread on PB in 2001 that has a few posts you may find helpful:

Yes he prescribed him abilify, he said his weight gain was ridiculous,he had another pdoc out of state that just said "oh yeah its a side effect" but wouldnt do anything about it. He was an old school doc took him off trileptal cause he didnt know anything about it and put him on depakote. and only 250mg and didnt monitor his levels it was useless for him. basically he wasnt even medicated except with the zyprexa. I know there is no studies in kids yet, but i know another kid around my sons age that takes it, when new stuff comes out they just give it to the kids it doesnt even have a bipolar approval yet, but yes he gave it to him, we had limited options and he says my son is difficult to treat. only other options were geodon which i refused due to the qt stuff, and risperdal which made him twitch uncontrollable, sweat and have tachycardia.

it for sure is bothersome, sometimes I dont know if stuff is making him worse or better. He just is a reactive kid who doesnt like to be treated like crap.

I am on abilify and an 24 years old. I am Bipolar 1 and my doctor has told me that there have been studies that prove that abilify is also useful in preventing manic episodes. I also have been told that it does not cause any weight gain. It has not caused me to gain weight. Good luck with your son and I hope this has been useful. Karen

I wish you lots of luck...it is hard at first with the insomnia and the akathisia, but I am happy to report that I have it all under control now and I couldn't be happier..I too am on Topamax as well, and for my opinion, if we waited for approval on all these meds from the FDA..all of us would be suffering! leslie
