Effexor For Children?

Posted by pmbm on June 2, 2003, at 0:03:18

Has anyone have children that have used Effexor? I have an 8 year old...our doctor is trying to convince my wife and I that Effexor will help him with his anxiety.
If you fit this category, please let me know. Let me know how your child has done, and if there were any side effects. Also, please let me know if the medicine helped. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks....

And has your doctor had the child checked for physical problems? Blood work, etc.? There was a recent thread where folks where suggesting that allergies and food sensitivities should also be checked up on before starting a child on medication.

And have you thought about therapy/counseling/behavioral programs?

Personally... putting a child on medication, particularly an SSRI or Effexor, would be my last resort.

Your welcome.

Oh, and one more thing...

Does your child have a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise? These can be very important things.

Also, you may want to look into vitamin/mineral therapy. Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) and magnesium supplements can be good for anxiety. How about Fish Oil?

Effexor is supposed to be one of the best medications for anxiety. And it is used in young children. It's very safe and side effects should be minimal. Lexapro is another drug he could try.

The major side effect problem with Effexor is if your child skips a dose. This can make him feel sick. But if he takes it the same time each day, he should be fine.

This medicine game is all about trial and error. Put your child on the drug and give it at least 2 months. If he is not doing any better, just stop the drug. He will not suffer any lasting effects of the drug. When you stop taking Effexor, it should be done very gradually. Also Prozac should be given while one is weaning off of Effexor.

Don't do it. 8 years old?? That's still so young. No, i'm sorry but-- unless in the most extreme of circumstances-- that's ridiculous. i've heard of a number of people (including a couple good friends) who were put on psychostimulants as children and feel that it messed them up. It sickens me how many KIDS we are forcibly drugging these days. Many people, including myself, also feel messed up from SSRIs and Effexor for awhile (hopefully not indefinitely) afterwards. And an 8 year old? No. Screw what the dr told you. S/He's not God.! Though s/he might think so. No, sorry. But yeah, there are other ways to deal with anxiety, especially while young. Take him to a psychologist or something. Good luck.
