abilify

Posted by e503 on April 22, 2003, at 9:39:13

pdoc suggested we try abilify for ben. He said we should cut back on his risperdol (1 mg. to 1/2) and add 15 mg. abilify. I have heard it is pretty activating and am really afraid, so I just gave him 7.5 mg. to start. Ben has gotten agitated on seroquel, zyprexa and larger doses of risperdol. Isn;t abilify the same as these? I am very nervous about this.

My daughter was also on Risperdal and than her psdoc put her on Abilify. She has a super sensative system so he started her on 10mg. However the starting dose of Abilify is 15mg. She is now on 15mg. You cannot increase the dose when starting Abilify for 1 month.

Some of the side effects of Abilify (at least which I have noticed with my daughter) are not sleeping through the night as one might have slept previously, irritability, anxiety and being very restless.

Now with my daughter the sleeping aspect has diminshed some however she is awake much earlier than she use to awake. However when she does awake she is much more alert.

Abilify is suppose to be the best medication out there now for schizophrenia as well as bi-polar. We have seem improvement since she has been on it however not all that we had hoped for. Her psdoc wants to gradually increase eventually up to 30mg leave her there for 6 months (he says) and see how she does.

One suggestion I would make to you is this, give your child the recommended dose that the psdoc recommended which is the 15mg. Like I told you once you start on it you have to remain on that dose for 1 month before it is increased. So you should go to the dose he stated. You don't want to have problems with that. It still is very new and quite frankly the psdoc's still don't have all the facts they would want to know about it. So do give him the 15mgs this is going to help later.

Good luck to you and your son. Hope my suggestions and sharing were helpful to you.

why can't you increase the abilify dosage until 1 month? What dosage did you start your daughter on?

Yes e503 My daughter was started on 10mg of Abilify because she has a very sensative system to medications. However after 1 month her pschiatrist increased it to 15mg.

To answer further questions you have regarding Abilify go to HealthyPlace.com and click psychiatric medications.

Now you well see where it says stay on the starting dose for at least 2 weeks but sometimes 4 weeks. It really depends on the individual. I don't know how your son's system is to medications.

But again I strongly suggest to you to follow the pscyhiatrist's starting dose of 15mgs. Abilify is a very new med and they still are finding out more and more about it. So stick with the 15mg and not the 7.5mg. In the final analysis I strongly feel you well see an improvement for your son.

If you do have any other questions feel free to post and I well suggest, share etc. God Bless
