ZYPREXA

Posted by HMK on July 30, 2002, at 8:16:09

I'm a bipolar II and currently taking Effexor XR, Risperdal, and Depakote. My doctor says Zyprexa is better for bipolar so he is switching me from Risperdal to Zyprexa. I have heard that Zyprexa causes weight gain- it is any more than what Risperdal caused? Has anyone had a positive experience on this drug? I'm so scared to take something new because I'm not doing very well- was hospitalized last week.

Any insight you could offer would be appreciated!
Heather

PLease tell your doctor to switch you back to risperdal if weight gain is an issue... I gained 50 ilb! If they insist on keeping you on Zyprexa have them add topamax for appetite control.

Hi Heather!

Why don't you give the Zyprexa a try for a couple weeks and see how it goes? I'm on week 3 (also for BP II) and I really like it so far. I haven't noticed any weight gain (I've had a huge appetite my entire life) and oddly enough, it doesn't make me sleepy (which it is supposed to, from everything that I've read). It does help with the "racing thoughts" and has definitely helped to stabilize my mood. By the way, I'm taking 20 mg.

I'm so sorry to hear about your hospital stay...I know that must have been awful. I haven't been doing well lately either...my pdoc actually FORCED me to take 2 days off from work because I was "too manic and may make very bad decisions" and she didn't want me quitting over something stupid like the copier being out of paper (which I actually almost did!!!). I can definitely say that the Zyprexa has definitely helped me regain a shred of sanity. Now I only threaten to quit my job when the copeier gets jammed up really bad. ;-)

Let us all know how you are doing, ok!

Peace,
Dane =)

Hi,

I take Zyprexa for schizophrenia. I've been on it for about 4 months and have gained 10 pounds. The drug documentation claims that the average weight gain on Zyprexa is about 30 lbs. I think I gained less weight because I exercise regularly and watch what I eat.

Good luck.

Though I am not bipolar, I have been taking Zyprexa 2.5mg every night for awhile now and I quite like it, especially for alleviating insomnia. I am also taking Effexor, and so far it and Zyprexa seem to be working well together.

A drawback is, alas, the weight gain, even though I try to watch my food intake carefully. In spite of briskly running 20 miles per week, I have still gained about 10 pounds (5kg) or so.

Regards,
Mr Beev

Zyprexa was one of the worst meds I ever tried and that's saying a lot. I've been on almost 25 different meds and combos but stopped Z after a week to 10 days. Gained weight, (raved cookies for breakfast every morning!), barely got off the couch was very depressed! It was awful. I was also on a Ativan, (low dosage) and must add, as you must know, that many people have been greatly helped by Z, I just wasn't one of them. Seems to work better for males, from what I've read here.

I only get an appetite suppressant from Topomax for a couple months. After that, it wears off.
