Melatonin Question???

Posted by JonW on June 15, 2002, at 15:13:53

Hi all,

When I take ambien to sleep at night I only stay asleep for 2 or 3 hours. Do you think adding melatonin would help with this? If so, what time should I take it and at what dose?

Thanks,
Jon

I think you should take one or the other -- there's not really data on the safety of the interaction.

When I had horrid insomnia, taking melatonin at the lowest rec. dose on the bottle helped me fall asleep within an hour.

I think it also helps to alternate methods so that your brain doesn't develop resistance to them.

Hi Jon,

Is this a Nardil side effect?

Are you hypomanic?

Just wondering.

Can you bump the depakote dose (still on that med)?

Take Care,
John

Hi John,

I was wondering if this was a "hypomanic" (quotes, as I continue to question my diagnonsense)
symptom as well, but it doesn't seem to cycle at all and the fact that the MAOIs are notorious for causing this seem to rule that out. I was having horrible irritability and agitation so my doc has added risperdal which helped me sleep the first day but not since then. I am still on depakote and neurontin as well and I could try moving the depakote. Interestingly, the neurontin gave me some definite insomnia (I take 3600mg) before I started Nardil and sometimes I wonder if it isn't the culprit. However, just on Neurontin I'd have trouble getting to sleep but would stay asleep. Now on Nardil I have trouble falling and staying asleep, but I suppose the neurontin can't be helping things. It's not providing any therapeutic benefit so I'm going to ask my doc about getting rid of it. I wonder if this goes away with time... that would be nice :)

I didn't know Nardil causes bad cycling? I think someone
said that it raises the seizure threshold. It has a metabolite
that goofs with Gaba Transaminase (thus increasing Gaba).

BTW, I've heard sparse reports of neurontin contributing to anorgasmia.

Good Luck,
John
