Klonopin question

Posted by Danielle on May 2, 2000, at 23:01:02

What is the desired effect of Klonopin? DH's doc started him on 1m twice a day and increasing gradually to 3m twice a day. Also Celexa 60mg a day. What experiences has anyone had? Some of my reading suggest a disinhibitation may occur. If he was once prone to violent outburst will this cause it to return? Thanks in advance,
Danielle

I've been on 2mg 3 times a day for about a year. Im my case, it was prescribed for overwhelming anxiety. I *think* it may be used for seizure disorders as well. My experience with it is very positive: a lot of the shyness, or panic, I used to feel dealing with bosses, strangers, coworkers, etc. is gone now. I'd like to know more about what you mean by "disinhibition." I've found that taking it did make me less inhibited, but in basicaly a good way - the only bad part is blurting out the truth in situations where you're not supposed too. Also, my sense of humor has gotten more surreal, but people who know me always knew I was kinda weird.

Down sides? Maybe a couple:
1. My memory is like swiss cheeze. But since I'm taking Temazapam, Serzone, Welbutrin, and Neurontin, it's hard to say what's causing what. However, I only forget the stuff I didn't really pay attention to at the time - it's only a problem because that includes all of my working world, and (yeah, I deserve to get flamed on this next one) almost everything my wife tells me.

I did have one violent outburst, but I was into weight lifting at the time, and taking over the counter ephedra/caffeine pills - I think they had the most to do with it.

One good thing: its addiction potential is supposedly very low. As I used opium/painkillers for many years, and haven't started exceeding the prescribed dose of Klonipin, I think there may be some truth to that....

Hope it help,
FP

One addition to FP's astute comments: 3mg/2x day is a lot of Klonopin. I'm a big person with a messed up mind but I never felt comfortable with more than 2 mg/day. Also I had no problem weaning off of it - no addiction problems.

Klonopin was great for eliminating anxiety attacks or panic attacks. If anything it tends to make people a little more mellow (and uninhibited).

Hope things work out for you,
Chris

I've taken Klonopin for 5 yrs. My highest dose
was 4mg/day. Right now I'm at 2.5mg/day. Klonopin
is an anticonvulsant, but is frequently used
for anxiety, panic attacks, and to help sleep.
It is sedating.

Some people have a very difficult time trying to
wean themselves off it. I once stopped taking it
abruptly and suffered terrible headaches,
nervousness, increased heart rate, and high blood
pressure. Do not discontinue this med cold turkey.
I've read here that it tends to "dumb you down."
I'm not sure of that effect, but how would I know
since I'm a user of it?

I use it for anxiety and for sleep.

Hope this helps

Hi Danielle,
I've been on a 6mg dose daily (2mgsx3) for close to 3 years. It was prescribed for panic disorder and worked beautifully. I think it may have some stabilizing effect on my bipolar disorder, I'm convinced w/o it I'd probably move in with the ultrarapid cycling crowd. As a former abuser of opiates (like one of the other posters), I have never abused this drug, mainly because it doesn't make me high. It just does it's job. I hope it works well for DH? Take care. P.S. I've had several pdocs recently who tried to tell me it was worsening my depression, but they don't know me well. Personally having uncontrolled panic attacks was pretty debilitating.

(nice line about those uncontrolled panic attacks, judyl! ;^)

For me, I guess I'd have to say that klonopin's biggest effect on me is something I have absolutely no handle on. All I know is that from the day I first started taking it, something that was present for all of my life, as far as I can tell, is gone -- and that's a Very Good Thing.

The best I've ever been able to recapture that feeling is to imagine someone taking a violin bow and slowly drawing it across my nerves. Well, no one's fiddling around with my nerves anymore.

yes, pun intended
