Opinions on the start of my book?

For those of you unfortunate enough to have suffered through my previous ramblings let me just say this is something totally different. If any of you enjoy fantasy novels, then I value your opinion on the beginnings of what will no doubt be the best literary work the world has ever witnessed.
Specifically I want constructive feedback on style, and the effectiveness of historical blurbs at the beginning of chapters to relay lore information that might be too bulky to include in the meat of the chapter.
Keep in mind this is a first draft, and that I have removed all but the start of the first chapter, and a few historical excerpts which would be relevant to the chapter it precedes.
Formatting will no doubt be mangled beyond repair due to the conversion to rich-text formatting. I'm sure you can deal with it.
