To choose to between two lives

Posted by smokeymadison on March 20, 2005, at 18:10:59

One day I stood in the far expanses
of a green meadow and wondered
which I preferred
the green, luscious grasses or the infinite blue sky

How is one to choose?
How is one supposed to reach the height of the sky?

Here, with my body planted solidly in the earth
I may lie and close my eyes
and try to forget that the sky exists
while the earth cradles my fragile body

But I feel the warmth shining down upon me
and I know that the beauty of the meadow
will not last my lifetime
for in winter, when I have grown strong,
snow will fall in torrents and cover me
in darkness and cold

Even while my body will have been well rested and nourished from the earth,
the snow will pile upon my chest, suffocating me, holding me down
then the sky will be beyond my reach
a distant memory of freedom will linger in my mind
as I breath my last breath
