The good news is that you are less likely with Xanax than with heroin to have to withdraw at a time not of your choosing. There is no other good news. I don't seem to make much long term progress either. Does having ER make the job of reducing a little easier? I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. Benzos are not easier to get off than opiates, IMO. It's just that they are less pleasant and don't create envy among the non-addicted. So you are being very considerate.
