Oh for golly sakes. About copyright? That is very silly.

Well, there is the autobiographical, where I was when I first heard it; also of a life once familiar, using a tip jar to gas up the car.

Then there is the defiance and freedom of the lyrics. I like how sigi put it, liberation and saddness. Maybe the saddness is haunted by a sense of futility, but accepted with dignity and a steel spine, qualities I admire greatly. The narrator seems working class. Though Ms. Welch was not, really. But that doesn't matter.

Modern American depression era. The big rock candy mountain and all. Someone's hit the big time. The big time is very much part of the myth in the US. But, really, most of us work every day of our lives.

Written out, it's not a poetic masterwork. But add the music and the voice, and it's just magic to me.
