Well, I've traveled a lot across this country, most of it by myself. I lost count of all the states I have been to.
While it is no former Soviet Union, the US is huge. There is an immense amount of simply beautiful landscape in this country. There is also a lot of ugly, boring and devastation.
My recommendation for the first trip? Hook up anywhere on interstate 40 and just start driving. It spans the country right through the middle.
One of my favorite places? Lymon, Colorado and the 90 mile stretch from there south to Colorado Springs. Simply breath taking.
I also love Southern California, southern Florida, and Maine. Just watch out if you go to Maine in the summer (Maine winters - well, the warning is evident) there are mosquitos there the size of your head.
I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but really want to see Mt St. Helens.
Seldom.
