Volunteer work sounds like a really good idea.
It'll get you out of the house; give you the wonderful feeling of helping others in some way; let you meet people who might know of jobs; give you experience which might be valuable in a future job; give you positive interaction which could lead to you being able to get letters of recommendation from those you volunteer for/with.
