I think personal emergency is a good excuse. It says it's an emergency so obviously it needs to be taken away and it's personal so you would rather keep it private.
Maybe they will wonder what happened, just say it's personal and let them think whatever they want.
I think it'll be OK. As long as it's a rare occurance I'm sure most people would understand.
