hey sigi,
I'm going to fill you in on all the sketchy details I remember from a NYTimes story I read last week.
1) puerto rico is a US territory.
2) p.r.'s inhabitants hold US citizenship
3) p.r.'s inhabitants cannot vote in the main election
4) p.r.'s inhabitants are not subject to federal income tax
5) p.r.'s political leanings vacillate between desiring statehood, with full rights and responsibilities, and desiring to remain a quasi-independent state under self-government, under the protective/destructive umbrella of the USA.
6) p.r.'s political parties (there are 2 main ones) do not correspond at all to USA's democrats and republicans. One party leans strongly towards independence, the other one towards statehood.
7) democratic candidates are courting members of both parties, so they have to be careful how they handle the issue of independence.
8) puerto rico is an island in the Caribbean, and is located East of the Dominican republic. It's too far to take a canoe from Florida (mainland) to P.R.
9)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico
10) the main language is Spanish
11) The food in P.R is yummy
12) llurpsie went there once as part of her cruise adventures. it was very busy in San Juan, and she was scared of missing her boat.13) no one
