Linkage, I don't know you but it sounds like your going through something horrible. No wonder you are crying :( Strokes are hard for, not only the individual, but also the family, to deal with. I helped care for a family member who had a stroke, so I can understand a little of what you may be feeling, and fearing.

As far as your mid-terms, Texaschic is right. Get an official note from your T (if you have one), or an MD can do it (your own, or at your school's Medical Clinic). Exams, test, papers (anything) can be deferred. Sometimes if you speak to the prof. directly (or the TA) they have a certain amount of leeway in moving around deadlines, without having to do the "official" process. If your courses start to look beyond saving and you don't want to try, then (with one of the professionals on board) there are usually still [paper-]ways to save your GPA. The procedures are daunting, but they are there for reasons, and MANY students use them. Do not feel bad if you have to. You have a very legitimate reason. And the school has people to help you with it all...

Call and ask for an appointment with an academic counsellor (the ones who'd help you pick majors, or make sure you complete degree requirements and whatnot) and get them on board right away. They'll help you with options, deadlines, and procedures. And they are used to these requests being made by students in emotional or physical turmoil -- they will be able to hold whatever you tell them. (I've done this whole process myself at my university when I crashed and burned mid-year, a few years ago, due to AN. And again was helped out by my prof and TA when I was dealing with a physical illness this year, so I could finish my final course) [I know each school's different but I'd think each would have somewhat similar versions of the same]

Be with your family. That's always more important. It's too hard to get through seperately. I wish I could say more to help you cause your post touches something in me.
Sending your father well-wishes, and you strength (and sleep).
((((Linkage))))) [sorry, I hope you don't hate hugs]
B-love, Elaine
