It's TEA TIME!!

Posted by Lindenblüte on October 22, 2006, at 9:39:56

I went to an Asian grocery store yesterday and went hog-wild in the tea aisle!

Here are my purchases

1) japanese tea cup (no handle) hand potted, with very cool glaze and design (4.95)

2) chinese teapot. modern white matte ceramic, with large stainless steel mesh filter and lid to keep about 12-16 oz tea hot. Perfect for whole leaf teas! (4.95)

3) large tin container of Tin Koon Yim Tea. No idea what kind this was until this am. It's a green tea, whole leaf, no processed very much, beyond each leaf being rolled into a small ball about the size of a pea. Unfolds in hot water. Delicious green tea flavor. Not similar to sencha, a little more leafy and fresher- not as much seaweed flavor. $3.95

4) Special Gunpowder. Small box. This must be a smoked green tea. Has a distinctive smoky smell (like gunpowder?) and is made from tea leaves that are rolled and then sliced into tea that looks a bit like blackened minced chives $ 3.50

5) Two "medicinal" teas. Hope these won't make me crazy! (oh, wait, I AM crazy!) Weight-reducing teas made up about 30% of the tea aisle. I figured I might buy one, if it works I'll let you know, but if it doesn't taste okay, I'm throwing it away . Oolong with lotus, cassia , rose, hawthorne, ginseng, and a bunch of things I'm not sure are spelled correctly. || Natural Relaxing Tea. Oolong with uncaria stem, chrysanthemum, skullcap, motherwort, selfheal (WTF is selfheal?!?). 2.65 and 2.89 respectively.

Don't worry Mom, if they make me feel funny or turn my peepee purple, I'll throw them away!

6) premium peony white tea. I doubt that my $1.39 is buying me a very premium white tea, but then again, it's only 1.39 I'm still trying to find a white tea that doesn't taste like dishwater. One of these days, I might splurge and buy a few oz from a really good tea merchant, but in the meanwhile, I have to put up with tea bags.

7) lemon green tea. everyday tea. 89cents for 20 bags.

8) Iron buddha tea. Have no idea if this is a green, black, oolong? tea. Who cares? 99 cents for 25 bags!

You're all invited! But you might want to bring your own cookies, biscuits. There's only Asian food in the house at this point. Nothing resembling pastry-- even Asian-style sweets or pastries (which is intentional- if it's not around, I can't eat it!).

p.s. so dissapointed there were no mussels, not even the frozen green New Zealand mussels for sale... Gonna make it hard to make Seafood soup!
