Yeah everyone in Finland takes their shoes off before going inside.....its just the total norm, so even if you're a guest in someone's house, you just take your shoes off automatically.
The opposite is true in the UK however....its much more individual with the shoes off thing. I think most people in the UK don't bother to take their shoes off, particulary when visiting other people.... which is slightly gross IMHO.
And I don't think it rude to ask a guest to take their shoes off....people have asked me loads of times.
Just thought I'd add an European perspective!
