I haven't read the book, but as it's Shel Silverstein, it makes me wonder if maybe that's the lesson, and a reminder not to keep taking, without giving.

I dont' know, of course because I don't know how the giving tree is seen.
But I can imagine if it were discussed with children, the question would arise about whether or not the boy did the right thing.
