I suffer from anxiety as well, sometimes really bad (like lately). For me anyway, doing selfless acts seems to reduce my anxiety since I get caught in others and the need/desire to help or try to bring them a wee bit of happiness, and it tends to occupy my mind and take it off the fears and anxious thoughts. Of course you are right, though, if the anxiety does become overwhelming, you can always leave.

I certainly know from family members who were ill and passed on how alone these times can be...GREAT idea and how unselfish...The cool thing as a volunteer is if I freak out I can go...(I suffer anxiety)

It has become a time of reflection for me, and it's quite nice and therapeutic. I think next year, when I hope to be in better shape than I am now, I might look into volunteering somewhere on new year's eve (maybe at a hospital, shelter or seniors' home) and provide some company to those who are alone and lonely at that time of the year. I plan to do something like that on Christmas day next year as well, and have already told my family that.
