The sad fact is people use mental illness to justify any number of behaviors that society doesn't deem approiate. The illness can be their own or they use another's mental illness to somehow made their acts OK. It is sad. There is right, wrong, and gray areas but - ill or not, if your reasoning is compromised.. get help, If it is someone you know (or propose to love), help them get help and support.
Some do not really listen or have any intention of following those vows they promise. The situation you talked about was a sad state of events all the way 'round.
