I discovered the book at about the same age you did, 15 or 16, and immediately had to read the entire book (a little furtively I'm afraid). It's strange to think how much of an information vacuum there was at that time. Just as important I think was the attitude that came with the information. I think you are right that it was the precursor of sites like this one.
