I have been following your story with interest. The part about the braces: I had them when I was a teenager, and the reaction was similar. They rip up the inside of your mouth, don't they? how awful for you! Luckily the tissue on the inside of the mouth heals and regenerates very quickly. Did the orthodontist give you wax to cover the most bothersome places?
I hope you're reading this, and not gone already... I don't know what to say about the brother-in-law, except that he is a scumbag who doesn't deserve to be around others, especially children. How horribly socially ignorant and abusive. Your sister is in denial, big time. I'm so glad you had the strength to stand up to him and embarass him. And I think you were very brave to continue to go back visiting the family, rather than just avoiding the situation; it's healthier, I think.
