hello fro the UK... here is my own list, ranging from the slowest of the slowcore (low/red house painters) to the music best sorted for the fuck off stage of depression (read ANGST!, ie smashing pumpkins etc)...

brian eno - on land
red house painters - down colorful hill
low - long division
various artists - the shanti project
elvis costello - my aim is true
codeine - the white birch
smashing pumpkins - siamese dream
american music club - everclear
mazzy star - she hangs brightly
this mortal coil - filligree and shadow
swans - love of life
harold budd + brian eno - ambient 2 (the plateaux of mirror)

...all i can think of right now, my collection is littered w/ music to listen to when your down, but if i could pick a number one, it would have to be anything by red house painters, the only band i know that has covered the kiss song "shock me" and turned it into a slowcore dirge...

last but not least, the pogue's "waltzing matilda" or even tom waits "waltzing matilda" both different songs, both great to listen to when your down... something ive seem to made a hobby of most of my life...
