Re-uniting with birth parent...any good web sites?

Posted by Wendy B. on August 9, 2001, at 23:21:47

Hi there Babblers,

I'm having a little trouble knowing what to say or how to say it to the father I never got to know. He and my mother split up when I was an infant. He was a drunk, and split for greener pastures, or, at least, ones that didn't require any effort or time or money or even just love. He signed away his parental rights so that my mother's second husband could adopt us, and my siblings and I have the step-father's surname.

With my therapist's encouragement, I have found out, 40 yrs later (am I getting old or what?), where he lives and what his phone number is, from one of his brothers. I think I will write a letter first, rather than calling, just because I don't want any 'scenes,' and I think I can ease my consciousness into the fact that my father is still alive and that he still is, perhaps, 'reachable.'

Besides advice on how to write such a letter, which I know many of you might have & which I would appreciate, are there any good web sites on parent-child reunification? Like how-tos? or: What if the birth-parent doesn't want anything to do with reunification even if you do? Like, whose needs come first? If I think mine do, is that just being selfish? I need answers, guys...

Thanks for any assistance,

Wendy
