I practically grew up in the water. Got thrown around in it ever since I was a couple months old... The way kids are over here...

Swum less over time... Swum not really at all since my injuries (around 10 years ago now).

There is a lap pool here, so I've been doing a little swimming. Was actually fairly surprised the first time to find that I couldn't float the way I used to. That I felt panicky and that feeling panicky would make me start to sink / feel more panicky. That I really had a strong aversion to getting my ears, nose, or eyes submerged.

I've been re-learning how to swim... And re-discovering that a large part of it is about trust. You need to keep your head in alignment for energy-efficient floating. That involves really throwing your head back (when you are trying to float on your back / backstroke). Really putting your head down when you are on your stomach (thinking that you have a blowhole or something on the back of your neck).

I... I'm reluctant / not going to do it... I'll just do the ambling about that I do with my head up...

But... I lose out on something. I have started to remember the feeling... The feeling of the water supporting you. When you throw your head back and trust... And the water effortlessly supports you. I remember when I was around 6 or so... The privaledge I felt of getting to swim a bit in the dive pool. That was my first experience (that I really remembered) of swimming in a pool so deep that I could float upright. Actually float... WIthout the bottom impinging.

What is wrong with the kiddy pool? You never get to experience how the water can support you. That being said... If you don't have the skills to stay afloat drowning is a possibility. Still... I hear you can drown in 20cm of water if you are knocked unconsiocus and fall head first...
