Transference is classically a psychoanalytic technique/concept, though psychology in general has adopted the term and its surface definition (i.e. current psychologists buy that relationships occur between patient and practitioner, sometimes ones that replicate earlier relationships, but don't necessarily buy that an unconscious exists or that transference is essential to the process--in psychoanalysis, transference is a core concept). It does sound as though your pdoc is using some aspect of psychoanalytic theory to do therapy with you.

He kind of sounds like an @ss (acknowledging that I know nothing about him and that there are probably real positives that I'm not seeing right now). Is your T comfortable with your pdoc practicing psychotherapy with you?

He usually avoids this kind of talk, except to point out my faulty thinking!, and I asked him last night why he doesn't answer questions that I ask about our relationship, he said, because "I'm listening." Huh?
