I wonder if this is in some way related to groupthink. We're pretty hard wired to think in terms of in groups and out groups. So if one identifies strongly as democrat or republican, one will be more likely to raise up their own party while vilifying the other party, no matter if it's logical or not.

It's too bad the political system in the US is set up to be such an "us vs. them" system. Two parties just isn't enough, IMO.

But now that I've re-read your post more closely (should have done that the first time), I see that you're talking more about people who, if their words were examined, might be guilty of hate speech or somesuch. So I retract my initial statement and say, I agree with you :)
