***possible suicide triggers in links I provided**

The film "Canvas" is about to be released, as explained here on the SPAN (Suicide Prevention Action Network) website. It's about a woman with schizophrenia and the impact of the illness on her and her family, and is based on a true story.

Here's SPAN's official position on the movie:

"SPAN USA commends the sensitivity, courage, and message of hope that is conveyed in this film. SPAN USA seeks to encourage responsible portrayals of suicide, mental illness, and help-seeking portrayals. Canvas is such a film and we urge everyone to support this film by going out to see it during its first few days of release. We need to send the message to the entertainment industry that thoughtful and realistic portrayals of mental illness can make a big impact."

Here's the actual website for the film, where you can see a trailer and reads reviews:

****caution - possible TRIGGERS in trailer - hard to describe what....some family yelling, psych hosp setting, etc. **************************

Unfortunately, it's a limited release, and the closest city to me is Chicago, but probably too far to go for a movie :-( If it does well, hopefully, it'll get released nationwide.

I tend to trust what SPAN recommends - I've been a member of their group for several years and their work towards grassroots suicide prevention/education is impressive. Click around their website if you're interested - some great resources.

Wish there was some way I could get to see "Canvas." Hmmm..not until October 12th, maybe I can swing some sort of day trip to Chicago....
