'Canvas' release-film hopes to raise MI awareness

***possible suicide triggers in links I provided**

The film "Canvas" is about to be released, as explained here on the SPAN (Suicide Prevention Action Network) website. It's about a woman with schizophrenia and the impact of the illness on her and her family, and is based on a true story.

http://www.spanusa.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPage&page_id=F8969146-001E-B429-CE7F46B59E87788B

Here's SPAN's official position on the movie:

"SPAN USA commends the sensitivity, courage, and message of hope that is conveyed in this film. SPAN USA seeks to encourage responsible portrayals of suicide, mental illness, and help-seeking portrayals. Canvas is such a film and we urge everyone to support this film by going out to see it during its first few days of release. We need to send the message to the entertainment industry that thoughtful and realistic portrayals of mental illness can make a big impact."

Here's the actual website for the film, where you can see a trailer and reads reviews:

****caution - possible TRIGGERS in trailer - hard to describe what....some family yelling, psych hosp setting, etc. **************************

Unfortunately, it's a limited release, and the closest city to me is Chicago, but probably too far to go for a movie :-( If it does well, hopefully, it'll get released nationwide.

I tend to trust what SPAN recommends - I've been a member of their group for several years and their work towards grassroots suicide prevention/education is impressive. Click around their website if you're interested - some great resources.

Wish there was some way I could get to see "Canvas." Hmmm..not until October 12th, maybe I can swing some sort of day trip to Chicago....

And of course....

Whether I get to see Canvas or not, I'll tell my therapist all about it, so perhaps this post can stay on this board.....:-)

It seemed out of place on Social or anywhere else.

Thanks for this link - it looks like a well made film. At the very least, I'll put it in the queue on Netflix. We're not likely to get a limited release movie like this in the boonies where I live :-)

...and while I'm plugging good films, the HBO series called "Addiction", which runs to 4 discs, is well worth renting for those who have family members with addiction issues. I saw the original movie special a while ago and just got through watching the rest of the series. Compelling television.

Thanks again, 10derheart.

You're welcome. Something about it just struck me.

Slim chance of me seeing it in Chicago, but not 100% impossible. Good idea, though, I'll put it in my Netflix queue, too. Wow, that rhymes....and I did have to scroll down to your post to see how to spell "queue." lol

I'll have to check out the HBO series you recommend. Do you ever watch "Intervention?" I want to say on A&E? Talk about intense.

Sometimes I can watch and stay detached, but sometimes it's waaaaay too upsetting, and that's not directly personal from addiction in my life (although there is food, and that's not said jokingly :-( ) I just can't handle all the tears and families knowing the person may die if they don't stop the behaviors..... I recently had to spend a whole therapy session telling my T. what made me sob over an "Intervention" episode.

weeeelll.....perhaps now I ought to think up a lighter note!

sure :-) (nm) » muffled
