You know, CS, the same thing happened to me at Brokeback mountain - not about the whole gay thing, but the how one of the characters denied himself real love and a genuine life out of fear.
I cried for days. It reminded me so much of me.
My life changed after that.
I think your therapist is right in that you will be able to process this in short order and will be the better for it.
I hope you will feel better soon.
