Many (but not all) courses in the U.K. ask for experience of personal therapy and I think it is important for all the reasons you've said. I also believe that experience of the therapeutic relationship at first hand is pretty much vital. There is no relationship like it and the ebb and flow (some sessions 'good' some painful and difficult) and raw personal involvement cannot be understood in any other way.
