Tried to talk to my T

Posted by ClearSkies on October 21, 2005, at 21:44:50

About the issues I have with her about her physical health, her retirement, and insurance issues (leading into bookeeping in general). She tried very hard to get me off her as a subject of discussion and was busy praising my sobriety, my outreach towards others in the outpatient programme being disappointing to me, and really reasonable to her. A whole rah-rah for ClearSkies going on there.
The whole time which she was clearly physically uncomfortable; couldn't sit still for long, looked pained, got up and hobbled around to lean on the back of a chair, all the while encouraging me to keep talking. I told her that I couldn't help but notice that she seemed to be in some distress, and did she want to cut our session short?
"Yes," she said, "you're quite sensitive to that," and admited to me that she was experiencing some breakthough depression and is having trouble sleeping, and then had trouble concentrating on what her clients were saying. I suggested that she call it a day and cancel the rest of her appointments so she could go lie down.
She took me up on the suggestion, and that was it.

So we didn't address my issues, but it certainly got my issues with *her* out in the open. Like, her discomfort and pain seem to be getting in the way of our therapy progress with me.

I see her next week and we'll see what happens then. In the meantime, I contacted my favourite T who retired her practice, and she gave me the names and numbers of 3 threapists with similar styles to herself, which I only came to appreciate in retrospect. I'll pursue getting to know these other and perhaps then feel like I at least have a choice for my future therapy.
