Hey, Crushed.

The more I think about it the more I think that Dr. X's call to Ellen was certainly unethical, and perhaps illegal. I know in my state (and I assume in yours) that I have to sign a form allowing one doctor to talk to another. Did you sign a form allowing Dr. X to talk to Ellen? If you did, then you DID give permission for Dr. X to call her, but if you DIDN'T, then that is a breach of confidentiality.

I don't know if it matters too much if you tell Ellen about your new consultation. If you do, tell her that you expect that she and the new doctor will not discuss you unless you give her express permission in writing to do so. I wouldn't tell her the name of the new doctor. You should also make that clear to the new doctor.

Working things through with your current therapist is almost always advised. Particularly if you have had this kind of issue in the past with other people. My feeling is that it is NOT productive to work it through with your current therapist if either the relationship has deteriorated to the point that there is more pain than working through going on or if the therapist has significant countertransference issues that would prevent them from being obective. Perhaps those issues could be explored during your consultation with the other doctor.

I wish you the best.
Falls.
