I used to keep a sort of journal, but stopped dead when I was burgled and they had clearly had a look at it (tho what was in it was in note form that wouldnt make much sense).

The intrusion of a total stranger with malevolent intent was shocking.

Since then, I have worked out logically that it would be possible to have a journal and just keep it somewhere uninviting to burglars(eg under a heap of magazines or something). Cant bring myself emotionally to do it, tho. But would suggest that you're not put off by my experience, just keep it somewhere burglars arent likely to rummage. I'm also aware that written is better than on my laptop, given its the first thing they would steal (if they found it).
