Williams: Tested by God

Posted by Miss Honeychurch on April 11, 2005, at 12:59:21

Hello Dr. Williams,

I have been in therapy almost 2 years now for depression and anxiety. I am not taking medication and I am close to termination. It is not hyperbole to say that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy saved my life.

There was a time last fall when I felt certain God was testing my new-found skills. That I was given a situation in which practically ALL of my rational thinking skills HAD to be used in order for me to cope. One day, while pondering my situation, it became clear to me that this situation could be a test from God or a result of divine orchestration.

I came out of the other side of the situation much stronger and certainly a little thankful that it happened. It was a tremendous learning experience.

My question: Is it possible that God would "test" me? Or, am I ascribing divine meaning to a random event? Does God even care what I have learned in therapy?

Are there any citations in Judeo Christian doctrine/dogma about God testing us? Aside from Job?

I am curious about Christinaity's view about the role God can play in one's therapeutic recovery. By the way, all of the new skills I have learned and used have nothing to do with God or faith.

Thanks for your response.
