> I have heard Magnesium can help reduce depressive symptoms. Is this true? I just recently started taking a Magnesium Complex (has like 3 dif. types of Mag. in it, one of them being mag. citrate) supplement. Please let me know of your personal experiences and what you have heard and know about Magnesium supplementation. Thanks.

Magnesium has done wonders for me. I used to be suicidally depressed (while on Zoloft and Provigil). Then one day, I stumbled upon George Eby's site http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html about his experience recovering from depression using magnesium, and thought I'd try it too (despite my psychiatrists advice not to bother).

I felt so much better the very next day I quit my meds. Not recommended, I know, but I've usually quit stuff like Xanax cold turkey and never had anything more than some mild shakes.

I also stopped eating calcium rich foods at the time, which I think was important for me. That was a few years ago and I've learned since that I seem to be sensitive to excitatory substances like MSG and aspartame too. I had no idea they were contributing to my insomnia and "nervous wreck" feelings so much.

Magnesium also has a curious effect of directly preventing "hate myself" type mental comments, which used to lead to suicidal ideation of "I wish I were dead". Stress seems to trigger this effect even though I may not be thinking of myself as that depressed. I take more magnesium, and then these thoughts are gone.

I've experimented with various types of magnesium. I now usually only take magnesium taurate (Cardiovascular Research Brand) and/or magnesium orotate. I have that in bulk form from Beyond A Century and put it into capsules myself. Mg orotate is supposed to be especially good for the heart.

Most people who have tried magnesium on this board seem to think it has had some good effect but there have been a few who thought otherwise.
