The NIMH has studied the use of procaine in the treatment of depression. It is delivered intravenously. Some people experience a robust antidepressant effect that lasts for the during the infusion. Others become psychotic. For one patient, the procaine challenge was the only thing that budged his depression.
Perhaps the procaine in the Gerovital preparations contributes?
