Scott,

Here's more that you probably want to know but I don't know how to best summarize this info.

There are two types of GH3 – the real original stuff with procaine and the version without the procaine. (Procaine probably isn't legal in the U.S.) Some claim that the procaine is the key and others say it isn’t. One or both of the GH3 types may be contraindicated with MAOIs. Here’s a blurb from Dr. Priscilla Slagle’s website:

“Gero-Vita is a preventive therapy for the aging process in people who are over the age of 40.
The original GH3 (Gerovital) was used in Romania for decades as a rejuvenating formula for the ravages of aging. Dr. Paul Luth, a German medical expert has researched the effects of GH3 which contained the anesthetic procaine. He has concluded the effects were not from procaine itself, but the metabolites to which it converted in the body - those products being Diethylaminoethanol, Dimethylaminoethanol, & P-aminobenzoic acid.
The combination of substances in Gero-Vita has been shown to be as powerful as the traditional Romanian formula & is based upon that formula.”

Here’s more info from a European site that we’re not allowed to name here:
Gerovital-H3® is also known as GH3 or KH3. The principal ingredient is procaine. This is the famous anti-aging drug discovered by Professor Ana Aslan of Romania.
Gerovital-H3® improves cell metabolism and has an effect on many mental and body functions, such as improving concentration and vitality, alleviating joint stiffness, enhancing well-being and acting as an antidepressant, as well as improving skin and hair condition.
It is also known that Gerovital-H3 can help reduce cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress and a rare hormone in that it is one of the few that increases with age. It is believed that high-cortisol levels lead to accelerated aging because cortisol “attacks” the hypothalamus, the area of the brain that “controls” the endocrine system. Ironically cortisol may run out-of-control due to its ability to damage the hypothalamus that controls the adrenal glands that produce cortisol!
Gerovital-H3 is also a reversible reducer the brain enzyme MAO (a substance that breaks down neurotransmitters (and increases with age), having a detrimental affect on brain function), thus accounting for Gerovital-H3's antidepressant affects.
Gerovital-H3 is most effective when used over a long period at 100mg to 200mg daily with regular breaks.
