Light box experiences?

A light box was recently mentioned to me as a possible relief from the SAD part of my depression. The problem is that I'm afraid of the effect on my eyes and skin. Anyone had experiences that have affected either one?

Also, I know these are very bright but are they strong enough to penetrate vinyl blinds? I don't want my neighbors to think that an alien lands in my house each morning. ;-)
