Hi Claire,
Taurine helped me quite a bit to get back to the point I was at before I had the bad reactions to Elavil and Effexor (Effexor once worked twice but now it and a lot of other things are making it worse). So I was pretty much left feeling horrible after Elavil and don't think I would have ever felt any better if it wasn't for the Taurine. So Taurine has gotten me back to point A, which I can appreciate.
I am seeing a doctor who is both an MD and uses natural approaches like amino acid therapies to treat depression and other conditions. I got all my testing done through her (hair, adrenal, blood, food allergies and urine tests). It was some very comprehensive testing and I learned quite a bit (I have copper toxicity which could be causing these sensitivity problems)
5htp and magnesium were a little rough on my stomach, but Taurine was not. I found out through the tests that I have digestive problems as well and have slow metabolism. My doctor put me on digestive enzymes called Zypan from Standard Process vitamins which I think has helped a little. It may be worth a shot for you.
If all else fails, also look into curezone.com and look into there liver flushes, gall bladder flushes, etc. You might learn some interesting things over there about digestion problems and how it might be related to the liver.
Let me know if you have any more questions as far as the testing. I got mine done in Boston, but you can probably contact neuroreplete.com and ask them about contact information for doctors in your area.
