l-lysine was for many years touted as THE solution for 'cold-sores' and herpes, by the HealthFood & Suppliment market in California.
i can't speak from personal experience (would i admit it if i were ;) ...) nor do i know if this description of l-lysine's benefit is universal or just a California thing, but it was being used and written up in articles all over campuses and healthfood stores when i was there. i seem to remember something about it's assistance with stress, too.... but then, it seemed everything that was 'healthy' had celebrated de-stress benefits.

Potassium from veggie juices~~
i HAVE used and can recommend this, really really highly for balance and grounding... correcting too much acid toxidity... all kinds of benefits... or just replacing depletion with maximal assimilation. i think i still have my juicing book with the recipe/remedies.
But:
if you don't think you would drink juices like that, and might be more apt to take in soup, i have a recipe for medicinal (natureopathic) "Potassium Broth". Not much different from any vegetable broth, but it uses the best combos/process, i guess. If you're interested i'll look it up and post it.
i also take a potassium gluconate 595mg tablet from time to time and feel better.

Gosh, i wish i could be helpful... my heart goes out to you in your quest for solutions.
Take care,
Escher

P.S.
Hey, just a thought- what about your sodium intake?
When i was seeking alternative remedies for non typical hypothyroid, my accupuncturist asked me one day, "You know that you are someone who should NOT be avoiding salt, don't you?" (Erhm!?) "Next time you've real down energy with feeling like bursting into tears, just put some salt from the shaker on your hand and lick it off. See if you don't feel better."
WOW.
HUGE difference.
i became a salt connoisuer. With iodine, w/o iodine, sea salt, kelp salt, vegetable salts, ...i've even still got some left in my jar of Eden "stone-ground-hand-harvested-from-sun-baked-tide-pools-on-the-Isle-of-Noirmoutier-by-salt-'farmers' Sea Salt".

But you prolly already know all about salt. It's too simple.
*sigh*
