Chujoe, well it's obvious I share your sensitivity to this issue. I had to grow up with the effects of a family member who was repeatedly shamed during childhood; people deal with shame differently-some internalize it; others externalize it; some heal or some cope..some hurt others as a result of it whether intentionally or not. It's sad to see the effects of shaming on this person in my family, and it has affected my life in so many ways. I appreciate your comment as you explained it in a more applicable manner.

Tarring and feathering also comes to mind...

In regard to your other comments, standing up for yourself could indicate a strong sense of self as opposed to being selfish. I guess it depends on the situation or how one interprets it.
