I don't believe that the existence of a place where it's safer to open up and be vulnerable in the seeking of support and understanding would be responsible for someone withdrawing from the real world. I think that's a much more complex phenomenon. I think as a whole, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

But I do not think of the main purpose of internet boards, Babble included, as providing a place to learn IRL skills. I do think that skills developed here can apply to IRL, but I tend to think of that as secondary.
