Your PDoc would be a jerk to get pissed if you were about to harm yourself and instead you put yourself inpatient. Any decent human being would prefer to see someone survive. However if you're not truly desperate, I'd strongly recommend against it.

I went inpatient a year ago in NYC, to a "good" unit and it did not help one iota. They said they "knew" why I was so depressed, attempted to solve my problems and just made them worse with crappy meds changes. Then you're punted out feeling as bad if not worse than when you went in. I did meet some great fellow sufferers inpatient but that was about the only "helpful" thing about it unfortunately. They were pretty arrogant about fixing my decades-long TRD.

Actually that's one good time to go inpatient - if you need to make serious meds changes and you need to make them quickly. You're a lot safer in there than at home (since it's very hard to top yourself inpatient as there're no potentially-lethal objects there at all).

Just my 2d.
