Thanks for these contributions. I have been trying to persuade my GP to put me on Gabapentin to help withdraw from diazepam & methocarbamol (Robaxin), get me back to normal sleep, and deal with both a tendency to GAD and anxiety as a side-effect of my antidepressants - Lexapro (Cipralex) & Bupropion (Wellbutrin). She's being rather conservative and reluctant to change my regime. After 5 years of benzos, & several abortive attempts to get completely off the darned things, at age 71 I'm getting a little impatient.

I was on Gabapentin for a while 12 years ago for insomnia; it was good, but trimipramine seemed better at the time. Unfortunately, as I age, the half-life of trimip has increased to the point where I sleep almost all day on a relatively small dose (50 mg)

This all started because my government drug plan does not support Cymbalta, which was working well for me. Effexor is evidently better marketed. I can't take it: huge anxiety. So instead of the plan paying for one med that worked, it's now paying for a combination of five including the benzos. False economy! Grrr. I'm about ready to write the Minister of Health.

I'd forgotten about Lyrica. According to Wikipedia, the Federation of Biological Psychiatry says it is first-line for GAD & perhaps benzo withdrawal, whereas Gabapentin is strictly off-label for GAD, insomnia & benzo w/d. But it looks like Lyrica has a considerably worse side-effect profile. I'd appreciate further comments from people who've been on both.
